I was out in the green machine the other day, I ran it 66 on the speedo. Don't get me wrong though, that was down hill, with a heavy trailer, but if was trying to turn it over 3400rpm, so I didn't want to go any harder.

When I bought my m1008, I thought it had the 4.56 in it. I was driving it home and it seemed like it was going faster that what my speedo was showing and I never have driven a truck with 4.56 gear before. When I got home I jacked up the back and counted how many times the drive shaft turned per tire turn. Turned out I had 3.73 front and rear, thankfully they reinstalled the locker. I was a little disappointed because I planned on swapping the axles into my suburban with 37 inch tires.

I like 3.73 gearing, its great for cruising with turbo 400. My speedo shows 50mph and the real speed is 60mph, so it puts me at about 2400-2500 rpms. I have installed 33 inch tires since which drops my rpms even more while sacrificing some pulling power.

If I had the money and time: I would install a beefed up 700r4 or 4l80 (if you really have money) and keep the 4.56.

I have a k20 6.2 with a 700r4, 4.10 and 30" tires from the factory and its perfect for hauling and cruising.

No matter what gearing you have, it may lower the noise level and lower the engine rpms, but it will still ride like a 30yr old 1 ton truck.

Actually I prefer 55-60 but I had the injector pump rebuilt a little while ago,
and now I keep looking down and it's doing 65. I got on the 4 lane a few times
and it says 70 before i backed it off. I'm a little more careful now:driver:

welpro222, you speak the truth. BUT, I enjoy riding around in a 30 year old 1 ton truck. and with
800-900 lbs in the bed, they ride like a Caddy

I hear ya guys. I know that these trucks are not, plush, fuzzy, eco friendly, hippie loving, hondas, but that's what makes them fun.
I guess I just like cruising around in a old hunk of green iron, that drives like its about to chew up the road and spit out a new one.

I do think that straight pipes add to the "feel" and "experience" of driving a old one ton with low gears to the max.

I drive the posted speed limits, maybe 5 over, never the highway. I want to keep my CUCV M 1008 as long as possible with all the money I put in her. If want reliable transport in all weather conditions, I brake out the CUCV....If I want to go road runner I brake out the 2014.5 Toyota

With my 86 1009 I usually keep it below 3K rpms,right around 60 mph by GPS,4.56 gears and 33"tires.I checked mpg recently as was surprised to get 16.8 mpg.My 85 still has 308s and gets driven up to 80 mph sometimes.

A 1008 with 456 gears with 31" tires will be at 3459 rpms at 70 mph.Thats close to redline...33s@3250 rpms,35s@3064 rpms.You have been here long enough to know our speedos are never correct,gps that baby at 70mph and check tach.

I'm running a 285-75-r16.

I had just replaced most of the fuel System, and was seeing how it was running. I don't know if I can hold 70, because I more or less kissed it.

I was shocked that the speedo went that high. When I saw 70 on the speedo and 3k on the tiny tach, that little voice said SLOW down retard this truck can't handle this.

I didn't have my phone gps speedo on so I don't know if I was actually going that fast.

I can tell you I wont be doing that again.

Filled the 86 1009 today, 16 mpg,not enough for me.Definitely see a regear and 700r4 upgrade in future.

Your tires are 33"s so if you were going 70mph you were pulling about 3250 rpms,not terrible but I wouldn't run that high very long.

I use a gear calculator at Summits website.Just look at any set of ring and pinion gears,scroll down to gear calculator and enter info.Lots of fun.

I'm confused. If I understand correctly, the stock 3.08 M1009 axles and the 700R4 0.70 overdrive would give you a final drive ratio of 2.156. With 33" tires at 2100 RPM, that should give you 95MPH. But you report 78MPH at 2100 RPM. Might you be running 3.77 axles?

Nice truck, in any case.
