Hello -

I am replacing the plates and decals on my 1991 M998. I am trying to replace the AC decal plate with fan switch and the two pull out knobs. I assume the knobs need to be removed but didn't want to break them in the process.

Can anyone give me some tips on removing this?

Thanks
Shane

You have to take out the instrument panels 4 screws to access the back of the plate (and unscrew the nuts). Follow both of the pull knob lines and completely disconnect them/pull them out. Gives you time to think if it was/is/will be worth it all in the end. Ha!

One of the cables runs to the engine compartment near the radiator overflow tank. The other runs to the inside (passenger side) and controls the flap in the diverter box (heater core area). They may have clamps along the way holding them in place.

Thanks. Just to clarify, so once I remove the 4 screws and access the back of the area I will need to completely remove the cables and pull the cables through the decal plate to remove it? If so, that is painful. :(

Yes. take the 4 screws out of the gauge cluster and lean it forwards. You may get more play if you unscrew the speedo cable. you will need to unscrew the back of the cable housings.

The easiest way to remove the wheel is to remove the upper part of the column with it. Two bolts hold it to under the dash and one bolt holds it to the intermediate shaft. Unhook the ground wire.
And there is one nut and long bolt just behind the dash. You may have a tilt column. The single bolt behind the dash can be loosened and moved up and down. I have seen some without the slot, though.
