My last active duty unit was a Transportation Company that had HETT's and PLS trucks.

My personal opinion is that the HETT system was designed by an idiot after consulting with a focus group of morons.....or retired Transportaion Officers.

I got into a pissin contest with an OSHKOSH rep that was training us on the trucks when I told him what a POS I thought it was......not so much the tractor but that trailer with all the stub axles and small tires. If they had put a decent engine in it instead of the double breasted Driptriot it might have been something other than a toad in the road. They are not fast on the road and when they hit a hill they are really slow. They are very heavy even empty. Do they have a cool factor....yes.....are they a practical road truck for everyday use....maybe, depending on what you are using it for.
For what the Army spent on one HETT unit you could have took a civilian rig and converted it and bought two.
Just the opinion of someone that has driven military and civilian trucks all of my adult life.

I have always wondered about the military attachment to the DD. When I first was going to diesel engine training in the late 70's most of the DD engines we rebuilt came from the Navy or Army. It's a ok engine if you don't mind noise, smoke, lack of power and using as much oil as diesel.
