IP pump question

Hello everyone! I am going to have my IP off while removing the pass side head and doing my turbo install. My question is, is the only way to turn up fuel delivery by removing the top of the pump and such? It seems I remember seeing someplace if you have full access to the pump,; the partial disassembly isn't necessary.

Thanks Drok, I know I have to, but I thought there was another eay to do it if you had the pump off rather than removing the top and some of the innards

CUCVRUS, normally, I agree 100%, but as I said, when I put my head back on, I will be installing my turbo, so I am sure it will need to be bumped up a little, am I wrong in this line of thinking?
Also, I still have my original question, with the pump off the motor, is there another way to adj. fuel dilvery rate or is the only way to do this removing the top and removing a cpl of parts to get to the adj. setting?

Well I don't know if there's another way? But the video I showed you is the CORRECT way. It's extremely easy to do, the second time I did it, it only took me 5 minutes. Or half ah beer.

Drock, Thanks much for your help and taking the time to post the vid link it does for sure look easy! My biggest worry was breaking off one of the screws on top of the pump. Thats amazing after you had done it once, it only took ya half a beer! [thumbzup] I'll just plan on following anong with that, should be even easier on the bench!!

Yes, there is an easier way. Remove the small 5 sided plate secured to the side of the pump with two screws. It is in the 9 or 3 o'clock position (I forget which). Once the plate is removed you can turn the rotor by hand until the hex screw is aligned with the window. Insert a nice new Allen key and turn it clockwise to up the max fuel.

3o'clock looking at pump front to back,pyramid shaped plate.Gonna turn mine down tomorrow.I bought recent rebuilt pump but its set up for turbo and I have no turbo yet.

Would turning my pump down improve mileage that much? I have a M1009 no/turbo. Someone told me my pump was turned way up. I'm only getting 16 MPG at best in the summer. I heard other guys say they getting 20-21 MPG. Thoughts anyone?

If it runs correctly now. Why mess with it? Re-builders love guys that mess with injection pumps. It keeps them in business.
Because going to the length of installing a turbo on a NA diesel without adjusting is only half way doing things.

Maybe. So when you turn the magic screw clockwise you are allowing the counter opposed pistons in the rotor return further apart then they were allowed to before. This means that when the pistons are compressed by the rollers hitting the eccentric ring they travel a further distance from relaxed to fully compressed, pumping more fuel. The way you set the max fuel of the pump is by measuring the roller to roller dimension on the rotor. This is done with compressed air pushing the pistons hard against the adjustable stop. Each pump model has a specific roller to roller dimension which is listed in the TM. All that aside once someone has fooled with the pump there is no way to exactly reverse what was done without pulling the pump apart and measuring the roller to roller dimension with a 1-2" micrometer. Now, if you smoke under full throttle you could try backing it off. Just heed a couple simple warnings. 1) use an Allen key that is the correct size and in new condition. 2) If doing the adjustment while the pump is on the truck be sure to have the throttle lever in the idle position and place the lid back on the pump in a diagonal motion starting with the lid high and towards the front of the vehicle, moving the cover rearward as you place it down on top of the pump. This is to ensure you do not accidently wedge the shutdown solenoid arm on the wrong side of the valve, causing a runaway engine as soon as you start it.

I have a stock 6.2 1009 with 33x10.5 tires,normaly get 18mpg.If its blowing black smoke it may be turned up to much.If not I wouldn't mess with.

Mine is stock also with stock tires. It only blows black smoke if I stand on the accelerator. Normal driving no smoke.
My question still stands...would tuning it down help the MPG's? If it only improves 1 or 2 miles I'll just leave it alone.

From your descriptions your IP is set up normal,if you want to increase MPG.Taller tires,less restriction on air flow input and a less restrictive exhaust would help.Also make sure your thermo-stat is functionally proper.Remember Im running 33s not stock size 31 tires.

What would a less restrictive exhaust be? The stock dual system with twin large mufflers seems pretty free-flow to me. You really think you're going to improve mpg, by spending money on the exhaust?

Thank you all very much for your help and advice.In normal mode (N/A) I have never had any issues. I was a dumb a$$ when I had the motor apart last time and did not see which pump I had, the 6.2l or 6.5l The truck had been repowered with a 6.5l when I bought it, but I have no idea if it got a new pump. I do know the hack that replaced the motor only put 2 of the 3 bolts that hold the pump in place back on and did not replace the clamps holding the fuel lines in place so i had to replace those. This time, when I have the pump off, I plan on seeing which one it is!
