Okay, I just put on a new starter, did the Roscommon 12 volt conversion, put in a new flywheel, new AC60 glow plugs, a rebuilt I.P. & injectors from badger diesel ( felt like an in frame restoration). I am having hard starting until warm, heavy fuel smoke under throttle ,and the engine dies when I blip the throttle(as it comes back down to idle). I am wondering if I need to adjust the timing on the I.P., can I just rotate the I.P. to fix this , or is it going take a mechanic to resolve my issues. I kept the 2 lines on the the pump and I.P. in the same place ( they were percectly aligned with one another), but did not take any other "timing" into consideration.Oh, and checked compression when changing glow plugs, all cylinders came in at between 480~500 psi.

It's been many years since I removed/replaced the IP on a 6.2, but as I recall, lining up the marks on the IP and block is a fine adjustment. It's still necessary to get the proper gear teeth engaged with each other. If I recall correctly, this involves rotating both the crankshaft and the IP shaft before installation so that the marks on their gears line up. The TMs should describe how to do this.

If you just bolted on the IP and lined up the marks without paying attention to the relative gear positions, then I think your IP timing is way off.

What color is the smoke?
You are supossed to line up the gears as said, then the marks, then make adjustments from there.

A mechanic can't do anything that you can't do. Unless he has a timing tool which is fairly rare.

Can someone quicklink me that section of the TM's, I have terrible luck/skill at finding info in the tm's.
Also, if the old pump was removed ,and the new pump was turned to line up ,(not the engine), shouldn't everything be the same?
