Is it weldable?

Seeing that I have a crack in my xfer case adaptor and havent located one at the local parts yard, I was wondering if I could just weld it? I have a welder and some cast iron sticks and since it is still in one piece I would think it is possible. Let me have yalls <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"> so if its not a feasable option, maybe all the <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"> will add up to enough to buy one somewhere. <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_nuts.gif" alt="Nuts"><img src="emoticons/icon_smile_rotfl.gif" alt="ROTFL">

Well you may not like my <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents">, but my <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"> is as follows. You may be able to weld the crack up just fine, but IMO it won't hold for very long. Some folks say they have great luck welding up cast parts. This one just happens to be under a LOT of stress which is why it cracked in the first place. Like I said that's my <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"> and that only adds up to <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"><img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"><img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents"> so that's not going to help you much I'm afraid<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_rotfl.gif" alt="ROTFL">

The crack can be welded BUT, the entire piece will have to be heated evenly to get a good weld. If it's welded without heating,the weld will hold just fine but the crack will come back right beside the weld!<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_shock.gif" alt="Shock">
Cast welding I've heard is a disappearing art,mostly just the older guy's know how to do it correctly.Just my<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_.gif" alt="My 2 Cents">! </font id="blue">

You're right, Todd, it's a disappearing art. I took a cracked exhaust manifold over to the shop that did all of my welding before I got my own welder. When I showed the manifold to the young fellow, he gave me the "deer looking into headlights" look, thought a moment, then said "I have to call Pop." He came out, said okay and had it ready for me in no time. Yes, the part has to be evenly heated. Pop stuck the manifold in a special oven.

when welding cast its inportant to drill a small hole at the each end of the crack before welding, then weld it up. this keeps the crack from running. if you can heat it thats fine, try to keep it wraped to keep the heat in so it all cools SLOWLY together. nickle rod is the rod to use
