Without the lights on the driver side brake light is dimmer than the pass. side, and then with the lights on and either the brake pedal depressed or the driver turn signal on nothing on the driver side rear works. suggestions?

Have you checked all the bulbs? Bad bulbs and bad grounds will give you plenty of grief when it comes to lights working or not.
