M1009 Brake question

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the brakes in my M1009.

When the brakes are cold, like after just starting it.
They are very grabby, so sometimes that makes me uninterntionally stop short.

But once the engine warms up, the brakes work just fine.

Is that normal for them to be grabby like that until it warms up?

I was told by the previous owner, that it is typical of diesel engines,
and the way the brake system is designed.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you, Have a good day,

CJ

i would agree to check into it... does it happen in the morning only? do you have lots of dew... dew (water)on the rotors in the mornings can have that effect

yeah, check it out asap, when i pulled off my wheels to check mine, found the pistons were not retracting properly

yours might be working once the brake fluid heats up...

new brake calipers, ready to install were appx 16 bucks apeice at Advanced auto, and in stock, so for about 60 bucks and 60 minutes I put on two new calipers, and new pads and fresh brake fluid and its like a new truck

I also found a dead mouse living on one of the old calipers.. been there for some time..

Hello,

It happens only when the engine is cold. Regardless of the time of day.
I have not checked for dew.

I will look into it asap. For now, I am letting it warm up a few before driving off,
to lessen that problem.

Pulling off the wheels may be a problem, I do not have a jack for my truck yet.

Regulator: Are you ever in the Atlanta area?

Thanks for the tips guys, have a good day,

CJ

Regulator,

By the way, did you put the two new calipers on the front or rear end?

And which vehicle did you put them on? (an M1009?)

Thank you, have a good day,

CJ

Warming the engine up without the vehicle moving makes the brakes less grabby?

Is it a hydroboost issue then?

you know you get your brakes from the power steering system so you might be low on the ps fluid and you have to wait for the truck to build up hydrolic pressure before the brakes are 100 %

If your low on PS fluid it may grab or shudder, if your getting air pumped thru, do you feel any vibration in the pedal? How does it turn when cold?

re; M1009 Brake question

Hello 2deuce,

I checked my PS level, it is full and fine.
No, I do not feel any vibration in the pedal.
It turns just fine when cold.

I went outside to check all my fluid levels, they are all just fine.

While I was doing that, a new neighbor walked over and we started talking,
it turns out he knows a good bit about diesels, and has a civy truck with a
diesel engine, and he said his brakes do the same thing and that as far as
he knows, thats normal.

He says what I should do, is just start my engine, let it idle a few minutes
to let it warm up, before driving away, like the guys with big rigs do.

But in the meantime, I have made an appointment with a local shop
to have a free brake inspection done this weekend.

We shall see what they say, and if it needs repairs, I will study the TM's,
get the parts when I can afford it, and attempt to do them myself.

Any helpful information would be appreciated.

Thank you, have a good night,

CJ

Working on these oldtrucks isnot as hard as it seems. Just take some time read the tms have the right tools and you will be ok.

Cucvfreek,

I would not think so, I used to work on my own cars when I was in my 20's. (I am 43 years old now...)

Please just tell me which TM # do I read to learn how to do the brake job?

If all else fails, I know a man that I can trust, that does brake jobs in his garage (he has been doing them
safely & successfully for years...).
Maybe I can at least get his assistance perhaps, I know bleeding the brakes when does is a 2 person job anyway.

I feel that I can get this done on my own one way or another, with all the information you guys are giving me,
so far, thank you very much, it is greatly appreciated.

By the way, when I was checking fluid levels, I also crawled underneath looking for leaks, loose connections,
dead or zombie mice, etc.. But did not find any.

Have a good night,

CJ

Zombie mice thats awsome...

hey I posted pics up on this topic, but I have a M1009

and yes I was talkign about front brakes.. the stock original calipers were HORRIBLE, the seals were all rotted and melted and missing..

best money Ive spent so far I think... especially with how my 17 yr old drives..

and no I stay away form Atlanta if I can help it, BUT any auto store/walmart flea market etc shoudl have a lug wrench that fits, check out any other vehicle you already have

I jacked mine up, put it on the jack stands, and swapped out the calipers etc, its really easy to do, only a couple bolts.

after I was done , I bleed the air out
