M1009 regulator

Hi Guys,

I had my two alternators tested recently, one tested bad, so I replaced it
Saturday and now it works well.

But when they tested the other one, it checked out okay, but...
The printout that came out of the testing device said to check
"the regulator"..

Now I need to know, what is it referring to? where in the '09 is it?
Where do I find one, so I can replace it? And roughly how much would it cost?

Any advice would be appreciated, Thank you, Good night,

The regulator is interal to an alternator. On older vehicles with a dc generator, the regulator was seperate. Without a functioning regulator, output voltage can fluctuate with RPM. At driving speeds, this usually means overcharging.

Ok Mack,

Thanks again, I will call the alternator shop I just got the other one from,
and see what they say too, hopefully they'll have another alternator,
or be reasonable to rebuild/repair.

Darn, something I do not need at this time, considering my current budget.

Hello Mack,

The alternator with the bad regulator is the passenger side Gen 2.
If I replace it, is it the same part number as the driver side Gent 1..?

I just replaced Gen 1, this weekend with a fresh rebuilt one,
from a local shop. And it works great.

Assuming the alts are stock, then yes, GEN1 will work in the GEN2 location. Best way to find is to check them. You can put a "normal" alt (where its grounded to the case) in the GEN1 location without issues, but not the GEN2 position. You should notice your GEN2 has a negative stud. The reason for this is it's a 12V alt, but it takes 12V from the junction block on the drivers side firewall and supplies it to the negative stud. The alt adds another 12-14V onto this, and viola, 24 volts. If it makes it any easy, think of the alts as being wired up in series.

Get your old(DRIVERS SIDE) alt rebuilt and replace the passenger side alt with it. Then, have your current passenger side alt rebuilt and have it for a spare.

If you forget later on, and accidentally swap your new alt to the passenger side, your gonna hate yourself. Use a paint marker and put a warning/note on it that it is to used on the drivers side ONLY!
