M1009 tailgate lock replacement question

I have a spare tailgate to replace my old rusted one, but the catch was that there's no key for the [great shape] crank assembly. My question is if it's possible to replace the cylinder (which I have) without the original key to that tailgate? Don't you have to twist it with the original key to set it into place? If it helps, it's currently set in an unlocked position. Thanks!

If it is unlocked, you should be able to lower the tailgate, remove the access panel, roll "up" the window and remove the crank and lock assembly. Once removed you will be able to remove the locking mechanism by removing the half moon clip if I remember correctly from changing mine out 2 months ago.

I would remove the crank and take it to a locksmith and have a key made. I don't think the E clip will get the lock cylinder out. You need to get the lock cylinder to turn into the nuetral position and then remove it. The E clip just holds the clutch on as I remember. You need to get to the pawl and spring to get the cylinder out. I have a new un-coded cylinder and it has nothing for an E clip. I hope you have a GM crank. The after markets are very thin at the driver. Good Luck.
