Check the TV cable first. On a 700R4 it is very important that it is adjusted correctly or it will burn up the transmission. Also find out how the overdrive was wired up. Switch on the dash?

You're talking about the torque converter lockup right? That's the only electronics. Overdrive is just another gear.

If the converter keeps locking and unlocking, that might feel like a gear change, but it's fairly plain if it downshifts.

It could very well have some simple valve body pressure issues, but I'd start checking simple stuff first.

What size tires is he running?

they were noted to hunt when in OD if you are driving a round town with it in OD with the 3:08 gears thats bad even on the highway with that gearing not much better, best to keep it in drive and get a B&M Trans Temp Gage and a very large trans cooler the stock ones not worth a dam, heat kills those trans. I think what you mean it goes in and out of lockup not shifts from 4th to 3rd. Scott O&O

It had an adjuster on it behind the TV cable bracket. What you do it, push the throttle all the way forward. Do it with your hand and under the hood, not with the pedal. When you've got the throttle open all the way, adjust the TV cable until it's tight...it will be fully depressed in the bore of the valvebody. You're just taking all of the slack out of the cable.

It's that simple!

It may have some valve body issues.... Has it always done this?

Does it lock the torque converter as soon as it hits 4th (OD) gear and then shift back to 3rd?

If that's the case, I'd wire it on a switch so I could control it myself. It needs to either stay unlocked until you get up to crusing speed...OR...like I used to do, lock the TC in 3rd to help speed up and let it shift to 4th while it's locked.

Anything else you can tell me about how it's acting will help me figure out what's going on with it.

since he let me use it yes.. he knows very little about cars. never seems to be right away... goes to 4th. cruise a bit then back and forth between the two.. 700 and 208 dont have 1000 miles on them... like to fix this before he gets back. its a m1009 with a turbo. just rebuilt 85 700 and 208 tranny. new tc. rebuilt drive shafts.. new 32" bfgs. lockright in the rear axle. around town its fine. only at highway speeds... i was wondering if the 8 lug axles with the 4.10 gears that are going in will help this.. few i talked to said the axle gearing would have nothing to do with it.. any help would be great. how does one wire this switch? thanks

If you have 3.08 gears and 32" tires the lock/unlock may be normal due to tall gearing, depends on the speed its doing it at. If you get up to 70 to 75 mph on level ground it should be turning enough rpm not to stop hunting.
