M101A2 Recovery Today

Well, went and recovered my first M101A2 today.

Purchased from GL at APG in Maryland.

Seems to be in decent shape - the canvas top has a couple of minor rips, there's some rust on the lunnette, and the data plates are scratched up some, but overall, not bad cosmetically.

I probably paid a little more than if I had purchased elsewhere, but its less than 15 miles from my house to APG, so I figure I saved in having to take a full day off work and the trip cost of a longer distance recovery.

The trailer is camo with the tan top - I really wanted the camo top, so if anyone else has a camo one in ok shape that would like to trade for the tan one, let me know and we'll see if we can work something out.

I also cheated a little - I used to work on base at APG and still have some friends there, so was able to get one of them to help me out by escorting me on base so that I didn't have to go through the vehicle inspection. Saved a ton of time, but the GL guy seemed a little confused and not sure what to do with someone that could get in without his help.

Since I only had 15 miles to go, I didn't get real in depth going over the trailer. I checked the tires, made sure that the brakes weren't locked, locked out the surge brake, made sure that the canvas was all tied down securely, stuck my magnetic tow lights on the trailer, and off we went. It was slightly angled forward, but really not too much, and once I change out the tires, I think it will be just right.

I stopped after the first 5 miles or so and checked the wheel hubs to make sure that they weren't getting hot - they were still ice cold (it was 30 degrees out today). Checked them again when I got home and they were still cold. I'll check the bearings as soon as it warms up, but it appears that they're ok.

I verified that the parking brakes work - they held wheels locked when I pulled.

As soon as I got home, I took off the landing leg, and put on dual wheel jack - that made a huge difference moving it around. Was a cakewalk after that, and I could now get it up and down far enough to hitch to my truck without having to lift it.

I've already contacted Maine Trailer Registrations about registration. Their site says that they need a bill of sale with the sellers signature and VIN# - neither of which are on the paid in full invoice from GL. Hopefully they'll take that invoice to register it as I don't plan on titling it in MD. If anyone here has any tips on how to use the invoice from GL to get registration from them or any other company in Maine, the help would be greatly appreciated.

My next projects on it are to check out the surge brakes and suspension, lengthen the safety chains, work on getting the electrical system converted to 12V, try to get the top repaired, and take the bearings out and repack them. From there, I'm planning to put adapters on the wheels to convert them to match my truck and my SUV, add some storage (still working on ideas for that), and a few other ideas I have for making this an awesome extended camping trailer.

Thanks for everyone's help on here - I've learned a ton so far, and looking forward to learning more

Apply for the SF97/title, The paperwork is worth the $60. A notarized Bill of Sale is included. Make state registration real easy.

I was planning on sending the form to request the SF97, but I didnt know that it would include a bill of sale - good info to have.

Thanks!

A notarized Bill of Sale! Real handy at the DVM, We get an actual Title Certificate for the unit here in Kentucky, not sure if you will get a SF97 or title in Maryland. Use the sn of the unit and add (0)s to make it a 17 digit VIN #. I have titled 6 trailers this way.

I need your landing leg. Also, I would like to see a picture of your mounted dual wheel landing leg, cost, and location to purchase.
Please give us some pictures. I will PM you my address and you can give me a quote on your landing leg you took off if you want to sell it.
Pictures, pictures, pictures...please

Good to know about adding the 0's to the serial number to get 17 numbers for the VIN - do you add them before or after the serial number? Ever run into and problems with the VIN listed on the paperwork technically not matching the vehicle because of all the extra 0's?

I'll work on getting some more pics of the new landing leg. It was a HD unit from harbor freight thats rated to 1500 lbs tongue weight. Price listed was $32, but I had a 25% coupon, so it only cost me $25.

http://www.harborfreight.com/1500-lb-capacity-dual-wheel-swing-back-boat-trailer-jack-67500.html

I installed it on the drivers side of the tongue since the passengers side has the brake line running down it, and would have been a problem with the mount. It bolted in almost perfectly - I think the bolts may have been slightly angled, but it wasn't too bad. It fit perfectly between the front of the tongue and the box that has the electrical wiring in it. I'll get some pics up soon. It literally took less than 10 minutes to install, and some of that time was running to my garage to get the right size sockets and wrenches.

I'm going to hold on to the landing leg for now, though I may end up selling it eventually. I may end up putting it back on - I want to test the trailer out in the woods on a camping trip and see if maybe its more stable with the landing leg down instead of the wheeled jack.

No problems so far, add the (0)s in front of the actual number, when filling out the application for GL, the e-form will require the 17 digits. I had to do this for several trucks also. The vehicles passed state inspection for out of state purchased units. Getting ready to register a M925, lots of "0"s on the title from GL.
Post a picture of the front landing gear mod you performed.

I removed my safety chains and replaced them with safety cables.
I like them better, snap hooks and they recoil back when not in use.

My 101A2 build: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?82301-Rebuilding-MY-m101a2-BY-harleyhouse&highlight=
Thats an idea - where did you get those from? I havent studied too closely how the chains are attached - are they just bolted on and can be unbolted and swapped out for the cables or is it more involved than that? How much does a set of those cables run?

I was a little shocked earlier today when I was in tractor supply - I looked at their chain, and with the chain and connectors that were rated to 3500# it was looking like it would be $40-$50 just to extend the chains by about a foot or so.

Ebay is my favorite store. Just search for trailer safety cables.
If you remove the long nose bolt on the front to remove the chain mounts
replace them with two short bolts from each side.

The long nose bolt is straight across the two shorter bolts will sit flat in the channel when you remove the angled chain mounts.

Ok - for everyone that wanted pictures on the new jack that I put on, here they are. My post above has the info on where I purchased it and how much.

It looks like it could be turned and mounted the other direction and get the bolts a little closer to the frame - I just noticed that after looking at it a little closer. I may look into that a little more this weekend.

I welded my plate onto the tongue arm. Then used shorter bolts to bolt it on. Makes a much cleaner install.

I'm planning to cut off the bolts so they arent as long - not sure I want to weld it on; its a cheap harbor freight jack and may not last too long.

If you weld the 1 plate on you can bolt and unbolt the main jack if you ever bend it and have to replace it. I have done that once on one of my 4 trailers.
