Hi, I am new to the site. Im sure its been covered but I cant seem to find it so I will just ask. I have a late 60s (67 I believe) M170 that was converted to 12v before I got it. It appeared to have the stock 24v starter though. not sure if this is possible or not. either way, the starter is toast so here is my question. Will a 12v starter from a cj5 of the same era bolt up and mesh with the flywheel? If thats the case I can get an inexpensive one from napa and not have to fork out the cash for a "12v conversion starter" from willys. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think the M170s were only made from 1953-1955. Mine is a 1955. Crazy things happen with all willys titles, but by the late 1960s Kaiser owned jeep.

i agree with the above response the starter for any F head 4 cylinder motor should bolt on. I would double check the 12 volt conversion and be sure the coil and regulator and alternator are all 12 volt.

Thank you both for your input! It really helps! I will check out the conversation and make sure it's sound and then pick up a starter for a civy with the same motor and tranny. It made sense in my mind that it would work but you never know with the military

I am converting a 1953 M38A1 back to 24V. I just, tonight, took off the 12V starter. If you can't find one, I'll gladly sell you mine for cheap. Not exactly sure what I'd ever do with it now.
