M1978 start issues

Red button would not start the M1078. Ran a separate start button to the frame mounted start solenoid. That worked until we ran into the starter thermal switch problem. We tied the two white wires together as suggested and that allowed the red start button to work again. Ran into the thermal switch problem again, so we ran a ground from the frame mounted start solenoid to the frame. Now the red button no longer works and we start with the separate button we installed. My question is did we screw up by doing the two suggested fixes together? Should we reconnect the two white wires to their original source? Thanks.

Unless you happen to own a Korean 170mm howitzer, you probably try to start an M-1078? The best forum for that is the FMTV forum.
