That Allison transmission may have provisions for a mechanical PTO but the M35A3 doesn't come with such.
The winch motor is driven by a hydraulic pump (NSN 4320014422895) that mounts to the rear of the air compressor.

See diagram. (from TM 9-2320-386-24P, page 350)

Yes, considering ALL parts involved it is indeed far more complicated than the mechanical set-up!
As for durability of the whole system..... don't know what the weakest link would be... hyd. motor, pump, lines, hoses? One advantage sure is that the max. oil pressure for the hyd. motor can be - or already comes - regulated to protect the winch itself, thus no shear pins needed! And no way to replace them with steel bolts, either!

It should be pretty reliable. A hyd winch is 100 times more user freindly than a PTO winch.

If I could find a suitable hyd motor I would convert mine over to hyd. I'm planning on adding a dump so I'll already have a pump.

Anyone have a source or part number for that hydraulic pump on the back of the compressor? I really wanted a winch A3, but ended up winning a WoW truck.

I'm thinking a MileMarker 12K Hydraulic Winch, a custom reservoir and that pump plus a little fabrication and I'm good to go. Probably much easier than trying to find a take-off A3 winch setup..

Cheers,

Clarke
