M936 Wrecker PTO grind

The only way to engage the PTO on my truck is to shut the engine off, pull the PTO lever back and restart engine. Carefully following there operation manual only serves up a grinder. Has anybody had this issue and if so, how did you correct it.

Sounds like the transmission isn't sitting still in neutral with the transfer in neutral. I always put the transfer into neutral the same time I am engaging the pto. Sometimes I have to put the transmissiin into gear for a second to get the transfer to go to neutral. Then I have to wait a min or so for everything to slow down and then I can engage the pto grind free. It doesn't help that as soon as you move that pto lever the engine revs way up. I put an air valve on the line so I can use the hand throttle if I am doing something that requires slow operation (engine pull/install) or rev it up after the pto is engaged.

Automatic transmissions require the trans to be in gear to stop the trans turning before engaging a PTO. The transfer case also so the drive line stands still.
