1 or 2 6x2's under the jack? 1 or 2 6x2's on the jack lifting surface? Borrow a jack for free from one of the local car care chains that advertise free loaner tools?

Have you tried just lifting it into place? Once you get the front stud in the bracket then the weight is a lot easier to manage while you get the first rear bolt in. It's good to have everything laid out in orderly fashion and good lighting. I like to have a long screwdriver in reach in case the shim(s) need to be shifted a bit. First time seems impossible, then it gets routine.

did it with old style bracket.... what a PITA... big forearms though 👊👊 and good for your rotator cuff🤣

Used the floor jack to bring starter up to the frame rail. Rotated starter up into position and hooked stud on to new style front bracket - very helpful Then juggled the rear bolts into position with the shim.

Looked at this thread for inspiration as I need to replace my y pipe and think I need to drop starter to get to the right hand manifold. I take it with the starter off the pipe and manifold will be easily accessible?

I did my y pipe with the starter in place no problem.

Me too, the inside bolt was a PITA, I stuck the bolts in before putting the pipe in place and managed not to knock the inside one out so it went pretty easy.

I'm an old man that's probably done half a dozen of these over the years and have always just lifted it up and rotated it over the frame by hand. There is no easy way that I know of, just bite the bullet and shove it in! :grd: Like Jack Kennedy said: "We chose to drive HMMWVs not because it was easy but because it

was hard (to fix 'em)"

Yes, the y-pipe can be removed with out dropping the starter.
Real tight. Heat shield actually has a hole so you can access one of the bolts.
I will post more details on my thread when I get done.
These 2 were my friends.

Can't you get to all 3 bolts on RH manifold by removing the doghouse?
