Check out the link below. Gives a lot of information better than I can explain it. Also, Google "a/c hard start kit". I used them on 20, 30, and 40 amp service for heat pumps and a/c units. My 002 will start my 2 1/2 ton a/c with anything else on but the hot water heater or clothes dryer. I have had the a/c on and started the 1 hp water pump with hardly a groan.

I doubt it, as to the noise issue, what sort of location are you going to be using it in? I find many people worry too much about the running noise of these generators, and while they are loud the 1800 rpm engines make it more of a roar than a scream, so it is not like someone is running a lawn mower outside your bedroom window. Also distance helps, assuming you would be buying it for emergency backup, if you can place it 50-100 feet away from an occupied location then the noise is likely to be no worse than traffic passing on a nearby street, any obstructions you can arrange in the line of sight also help, fences, sheds, trees, bushes, etc.

My 002 is about 120 ft from the house. When inside you almost can't hear it unless listening for it. Outside if you are 30 ft or so away from it is no issue carrying on a conversation. Like Ike said, the noise is over rated
My neighborhood consists of small lots, 1/4 acre or less. I currently have my Mep-002a about 50 feet from my house but that puts it about 25 feet from my neighbors house. No one has complained and they have their own screamer from a big box store but I've also been on the lookout for an ASK kit. But I'm wondering what I should focus my bidding on, an ASK kit or an 802A. I'd probably pass my current 002a along to my parents so it would be a win for everyone.

I have an exposed MEP-002A. The only time I wish it were quieter is when I'm standing near it. It's about 60 ft from the house, and is behind a parked vehicle and I have added a tractor muffler (mostly to keep the weather and critters out). It's a low rumbly roar from the house and nobody finds it objectionable.
By comparison, the neighbor across the street has a 4KW contractor generator with the usual 8 hp Briggs. It's noisy in an unpleasant way and you can hear it all the way down the road.

My 002A would likely do the same. Just have never tried it. I apply load on mine to exercise them with a load bank I built. Guess I should fire up one of the heat pumps next test time so I can be more specific with customers who ask if 002a will run a heat pump. That is why I was curious about the hard start kit and its use on heat pumps which had no issues to extend the range of the generator by virtue of lower starting amps for the HP. Will absorb the article.
I rely mostly on gas for our main floor so one 002A gives us all we want, even in a relatively large house. Have never really tried the oven and drier at the same time. With only 2 people, we can manage our loads within the unit's capacity. House full of rug rats, different story. Well pump isn't even noticeable on the 002 when we are running on it and we don't scrimp on lights or electronics.

I sold a 002 to a neighbor and it has a hard time starting his 3 ton heat pump. He has an all electric house and has to run basics only if he wants the heat pump or ac. Maybe candidate for a hard start kit.
To me, the generator is only for basics during a power outage. I am not looking for ac or heat pump (use wood as much as possible now for heat). I was not able to catch a 003, but would have tried to run everything if I had it. Have my 2200 sq ft house unit permanently connected now (with main panel interlock) and running off oil furnace fuel tank.David
If you have read the posts above, I guess it is whatever your (or someone else's) wallet can stand. Personally, I think that GMG price is ridiculous. But they aren't selling to us.

well i would still like to know what a reasonable retail price for an 802 is. there were just 80 of them auctioned, but they were for the most part ROUGH, beat and missing parts. some were like new but most are just parts units. strangely the ones with very high hours went for just as much as ones that were obviously new ????
I picked up two 802s at the last auction. Both appear be to be in great shape. I will get them next week and spend another fortune on batteries
2009 with 9 hours and was not a rebuild, paid 1600.
2002 with 3 hours , 2010 rebuild, paid 1405.

I've sold several within Virginia and 2 to NJ folks. All understood the 002a's limitations and its resilience in handling sudden loads. Have never had a complaint but have never had anyone try to run an all electric house off one.
BTW: Shipped a starter to a fellow in VERY rural NM who works for the state . They have no electrical service and live off solar and a civilian diesel that is powered by the MEP-3 engine and uses same starter. Says they have been using coleman lanterns since the starter went south. Tough living. He sounds young on the phone. More POWER to them, I say!
