MEP002a & MEP017A battery charger voltage regulator compatability

The battery charger voltage regulator is bad on my MEP002A. I have an MEP017A I have no use for and was wondering if other than form factor if the MEP017A VR could be used in the MEP002A.

Compare the AC voltage between the 002/003 style and the 017 style. the 017 have a bigger stator but very similar. If the AC voltage in is roughly the same it should work fine.
