NAPA Spin on Fuel Filter

I bought my 003 back in the spring and I've just recently finished up the transfer switch and a few other projects. I'll eventually post up some pics of that.

I have been getting an aux fuel supply set up and I've been getting a little more familiar with the fuel system. I have a couple of concerns about the fuel filter set up on the gen set now and I'm looking for some feedback.

I know the original fuel system has a strainer, then a primary filter, then a secondary. That set up was replaced with two NAPA spin on fuel filters before I bought the gen set (NAPA part number 4309). While this is a nice feature I only recently looked at the filter specs. The filters are NAPA part number 3123. NAPA states the the filters are 12 micron filters. I know that this is a typical primary filter rating, but secondary filters usually have a 2 micron or so rating. I'm thinking about replacing the second filter with a more appropriate secondary filter. I'm having trouble finding something to fit the spin on base with a 1-12 thread.

Any suggestions? Am I going overboard even addressing this? Anyone have the specs for the original secondary filter?

On a side note, I had a new in box (but old) racor 200FG fuel water separator hanging around that I was going to use to filter the incoming aux fuel. This one is a 2 micron rated set up, I may switch out the filter cartridge in that for something with a little larger micron rating, either 10 or 30 so it doesn't clog up as fast. I mounted it in a spot that is accessible, but somewhat difficult to service. I'm trying to keep everything in the ASK. I did consider swapping this one for the second spin on filter but it just won't fit in that spot.

Have you looked at the Wiki/Sticky?

Yes, the NAPA and Fram part numbers listed that are for the OEM set up are listed at 10 micron. I haven't been able to find the specs yet for the Fram part number listed. Although the Fram part is listed as a secondary filter, so it may in fact be a smaller micron rating. This is all good info, but it doesn't tell me what the military spec was, it just tells that the aftermarket units that physically fit in there and filter to 10 micron.

I'm really leaning toward either finding a filter that fits the NAPA base that I have that is rated for 2 micron, or replacing the base with something that does fit a filter with a smaller micron rating. The last thing I want to do is screw up the injectors or IP due to some particles getting in there that are too large.

I found this one made by champion (Fram): http://www.champlabs.com/sites/champlabs.com/files/man_up/CompMatrix.pdf
Available for purchase here: https://store.rstenstrom.com/product.php?productid=16399
40502P- 1-12 thread and 2 micron filter

This one is not a water separating filter. Although if I put all of my fuel into my aux tank and always let it fill by the aux pump it will have passed through two fuel/water separators before going through this one.

EDIT: I found one more that may work out. Looking at the gasket dimensions in comparison to the NAPA filter I have this may work out ok.
Cim-Tek CIM250E02-70819 2 micron (not a water seperating filter)

Same as above but with water separating ability and different media to allow for more contamination holding capacity.

Thanks for the heads up! If I end up buying a new adapter instead of using mine and finding a filter to fit it I'll probably buy from you. That is a great deal.

I ended up ordering the Cim-Tek filter that I referenced above to swap out with the final filter before the IP. It has a 2 micron rating, it is water separating and it is a couple of inches longer than the NAPA filter I have on there now. I checked all the dimensions last night and it should fit ok. I opted for the slightly more expensive one which has a filtering media that they call hydroglass. It holds 2-3 times the contaminants of the cellulose filter and it is also water separating. The only down side is it doesn't have a drain. That isn't too big of a deal because the 10 micron filter before it does and the aux filter has a drain and a clear bowl.

I also ordered a few 30 micron filters for the aux fuel input filter to replace the 2 micron one that came with the assembly. Since I already had the new assembly hanging around it was worth it just to swap out the filter. I don't expect that I will have any issues with water or contamination getting to the IP and injectors with this set up.

I just wanted to update, I've installed both filters mentioned above and everything is working well. As I saw in the drawing for the filter, the gasket was a slightly smaller diameter than what was on there but the flat flange for the gasket seat is very wide allowing a fairly large range of gasket diameters. It fit without issue.

Here is a pic of the racor fuel water separator and filter on the aux fuel line that I have a valved quick connect fitting on. This is before I put the ASK panel back on. You can actually replace the filter element without removing the panel. The fuel bowl can also be drained, I have the hose running from the bottom of the fuel bowl valve to outside the enclosure.

Also, a quick note that the fuel looks green since I run a little two stroke oil in the fuel to add some lubricity to the low sulfur stuff at the pumps.
