Need Mack 5-Ton Power Steering Help!

okay I will bring it up with me yea the hose blew out while taking the dump truck off the back of the Duece. but I will bring it up but how much would you charge me its a high pressure hose 1" and about 3 an 1/2 feet long

THE transfer pto IS NOT full time engaged, only when the crane is needed,

Only contribution I have on this topic is that when a Mack powered A1 has good power steering, IT WORKS TOO WELL. Very good for low speeds but past about an 1/8 of a turn and it tries to turn the wheels for you. I actually fight it at road speeds when I drive one and it scares the heck out of me when I get in it for the first time when I've been out of it for a few months. Only takes about 50 miles or so of driving and I'm back in tune with it. I just keep both hands on the steering wheel and get prepared for it's "assistance" and get rid of the "snuff" and spit bottle. When your turn past 1/8 of a turn going down the road, get ready to fight back toward straight to keep it in your lane.

I don't own a Mack, I just get to drive "Proud American" for Papabear on occasion and it's Mack Powered. Mack's are rare as the Army decided to go to "multi's" for everthing about as soon as the Mack conversion was approved. I read somewhere that only about 2,500 were ever converted to Macks in A1 status and the rest became A2 Multi's as far and the M5X series goes. The ENDT-673 did have commercial success though, thankfully and spare parts are out there. As far as my collection, you took all the trucks out here, Joey is still mad about all those dump trucks leaving. If you have a spare, drop it off back out here. No motor needed or anything, just a body and axles, it'll be fine if it just sits!!!

Same Problem On M51

I am having this same steering problem on my Mack powered M51. On a right turn I get a little resistance and then the power steering kicks in. Left turn is difficult all the time now. The problem seems to have gotten worse since the weather got cold. I checked the fluid level in the reservoir and it is fine. Anyone with any ideas on what may be wrong and more importantly, how to fix it?

It is your spool value or you have air in your lines, at-least that was the problem for me. I would bleed the system to start with, then if the problem has not stopped you have to remove the power-steering. Use the TM it will give you a pretty good map to fallow. However I did not have to go that far. I just bled the system and then it works great now.

Bleeding the System

Can you give me a brief description of how to bleed the lines or tell me what TM to look at? The TM's I've looked at so far don't seem to be the same power steering system as mine.

it is pretty easy. you have to jack the front end off the truck off the ground so the wheel are not touching. Then you have to let it sit for about an hour to let the system drain. after the hour you have to fill the reservoir to the full line. Then you Crank the truck up and turn slowly lock to lock. Check fluid level add if needed. then turn lock to lock 3 time slowly and pausing for a brief second when at each lock position. After that you need to check the the fluid add any if needed repeat step two one more time and then your done or as 73m819 said drink a beer.

More Problems Today

I had my truck out today for a project and developed some new problems. At first it was acting like previous - no power steering for left turns and right turns had power assist after a brief restriction. After driving for a bit I came up to an intersection where I had to turn right. I turned the wheel and had power assist for the start of the turn but then was completely unable to turn the wheel enough to make the right turn. It wasn't just that there was no power assist - it was a complete inability to turn the wheel anymore to the right. I ended up having to drive home NASCAR style - all left turns. I have no idea what is wrong at this point.

This is my thoughts you have a lot of air in the lines. I would bleed the system to start with. Then if that does not fix the problem then it is the spool valve and is seized.
