"New Heads" Now issues.

It is longer to start. A lot longer when cold. Also, a lot of grey smoke, ?unburnt fuel, once started. I will swap out the mechanic supplied glow plugs for the Dura-Term ones I bought. Any other suggestions?
History: This is the engine that over heated due to the Katz heater defective bolt. Cracked a head and mechanic says it now has crankcase pressure due to blow-by.
Runs great going down the road, though it is louder than before.

New heads on a tired bottom end will end with the rings going bad . So he probably is right about the blow-by . Weak rings lowers compression and would make a diesel start hard.

I recently got a set of "rebuilt" heads on FleaBay, installed them and glad I did a compression test before re-assembling everything else 'cause the compression sucked. Took the heads off again and down to local machine shop, turns out EVERY INTAKE valve leaked. Exchanged this set of "rebuilt" heads for another from the original seller, and ARE YOU KIDDIN ME the next set leaked too. I'll start a whole thread on my personal nightmare when I know the happy(?) ending.
But my point is: you never know until you do a compression test.
