I recently bought a M101a1 trailer from GL. Under the tarp were two Yanmar 3kw diesel generators. I have never owned or used a generator before any tips for things to check and service? Also trying to build trailer into an expedition trailer and need funds for the build. I have seen these generators on eBay for 1200$ is this a fair price for these generators if running? 1 has 14 hours and the other has 400, both were wired to a switch box inside the trailer. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Welcome to Steelsoldiers. Trailer looks perfect. You might get $1200 per generator, but that is optimistic. Maybe wait until a hurricane hits? If you plan to replace the axle with one to match your tow vehicle, I would be interested in buying it.

Currently debating getting some 16.5 rims in 5x5.5 bolt pattern with 37" military take offs or buying new axle and matching 5x5 wheels like my jeep so I can carry one spare.

The generators you have are not MEP-016C's they are now MEP-016D's which are A or C series that have been retrofitted with Yanmar L70 diesel engines, I agree $1,200 is high on the used market unless they are in mint shape. You might get it there are a lot on ebay in that range, but they don't sell fast.

p.s. often it seems like little attention was paid to the Vietnam era vintage wiring inside the control box when the engine retrofits were done 10-15 years ago, so you may want to check it out, in particular look for metal fatigue near connections, broken resistors on backs of gauges, etc.

Very low hours if the meters are correct. The engines look almost brand new. So what would you say a fair price for them would be once I get them running? I already listed my tarp bows and racks on eBay/Craigslist for 600 or best offer. There is a place called Rapco near me that offered to buy all of this stuff but wouldn't give me a quote until I drove up there.

These generators often sell as is on GL for $350-$500 (of course there are also rare occasions that they go higher), and I would would say most that are sold on the open market by individuals on craigslist, ebay, etc. end up selling for under about $1,000, those with asking prices higher than $1,000 tend to be slower to move, although will likely sell sooner or later. The problem with selling on ebay is at almost 300 pounds shipping becomes a problem, which generally limits sales to your local area. Major storms can drive up prices on generators even if they are far away, as much of the demand for generators is based on perception. Regional issues also count against you some as you are too far south for major winter weather events, and too far inland to get the hurricane preppers. Having said all that considering you are in the DFW metroplex and Texans don't mind driving a ways to pick up stuff, you may have even with a higher than average asking price.

p.s. one nice thing about these MEP-016D generators is they will jump start off a 12V battery even though they have a 24V starter. Note there is no electrical charging system
