Noob 12v alt. Question

I recently purchased my first m35a2 as well as an m109a2. It was a package deal.

Anyway, I have an extra 10si alternator that everyone seems to be using as an additional alt. for 12v. I have read through almost every thread I can find on the subject and I am a little confused about needing to isolate the ground for the 12v system.

Some say that isolation is not needed as grounding to the body will yield 12v.
Some say ground isolation is needed to not interfere with the 24v system.


Anyone have any input?

I do not run an isolated ground... I have had no adverse effect. 12v stays at 12v, 24v stays at 24v

Any attempt to isolate the grounds would not only make you TONS of extra work, it would be of no benefit.

The ONLY bennefit for ground isolation, that I can think of anyway, is if you need 36V for something. Otherwise a waste of a bunch of copper and time. Un-grounding a std. alternator = PIA

I run a common ground with no issues.

Thanks everyone. I figured this would be the case, as if it were too much trouble, it wouldn't be such a common upgrade.
