operating the heater

How do i get the heat to work in my deuce. I've never used it and it's cold today. how does it work

Hey newb
I reinstalled my thermostat today which has been out since the recovery from pa. Remember? Heat worked great on the way home tonite. I almost froze outside today putting it in lost threads in the manifold and had to helicoil. Open the valves and flip the switch inside the truck. Don't forget to make sure to open the air gate you'll have to figure out which one is which. One switches defrost to floor. The other outside air off and on.

where are the valves? I have a knob for air, and a knob for defrost. I pulled the air knob out, but no heat.

My dads has an additional electric switch, with off, high, and low. It seems to do a good job, his heat works, and is actually warm. Mine just seems to do nothing.

Have you looked under the hood to verify that you have a heater?? You should have a toggle switch to control the fan motor.

Open the hood and starting at the heater follow the heater hoses back to where they enter the engine block. You will see a petcock there on both entry points. Open those. They should turn OUT about 1 inch. that allows you hot water to enter your heater. Then go inside the cab and pull the "air" cable. That allows the air to enter the cab. Next go tho the other cable that selects heat or defrost. choose one. Then flip the toggle switch to high or low. That turns on the fan. Once the engine warms up you will have heat.

It could be the fan. Two of mine have fans that don't operate. You should here the fan come on when you hit the toggle -- with the engine off.

The fan motors are built in a stupid way. They have a ground return lug that is compressed between a plastic piece, the core laminations, and a nut. All on one of the two bolts that affix the two metal bell housings. The problem is over time the plastic relieves the pressure from the nut, and the ground lug inside the motor becomes open circuited.

Taking the motor apart is difficult because the laminations are not varnished, and they skew and get jammed in the bell housings. Also, the long bolt that holds the internal ground lug does not remove! It is bolted to the field core laminations.

Beware that the shaft end that holds the fan squirrel cage gets expanded out when the manufacturer hit it, end on, with a hammer for some reason, and will not pull smoothly through the sleeve bearing. It needs to be filed down in size.

I got mine apart.... stupidly... broke up a few things, and had to repair them.

Also make sure that the heater is plumbed correctly. There is a "cartoon" that addresses the correct hose routing.

well it appears as if i don't have a switch for the fan anymore. that could be part of the problem. I haven't checked the hoses yet to see if the valves are open yet
