Please help. My husband is outside trying to fix the generator. It had a problem
with the starter motor that was not properly resolved. Now he starts it with some trick (he touches something with a metal object) It starts but then it goes faster
and faster and makes a lot of smoke and when we try to shut it off it won't shut off, even with the emergency shut off. Eventually it gets so fast it sounds like it will explode and then it shuts off. This probably sounds too catastrophic. Anyway he thinks it has something to do with the governor and I think it must be something electrical. He is taking the solenoid that is near the governor off and trying to get it to go in and out easier. Any suggestions on what might be happening would be greatly appreciated. We are in Panama and far away from any service help or parts.
This is Promise.

Could be that the fuel metering lever on the IP is stuck full on; first thing check and see if this lever moves freely. If this lever is stuck, nothing you can do electrically (like the emergency stop breaker) will do anything. It would also prevent the governor from regulating the speed of the engine. Don't start this genset again until you address this issue.

We figured out that there were two loose screws on the side of the injection pump that controls the amount of fuel that goes into the injectors. He had to take the fuel injection pump out because there was no space to work and then tightened the clippy thing because he didn't have any locktite and when he put it all back together, now it is working just fine. He adjusted the thing and the smoke went away and now it shuts off just fine. Sorry to alarm you but this was very scary.

To kill a Diesel you must shut off fuel or air or both.
It is a good idea to not start a Diesel until you familiarize yourself with some sort of manual shutdown alternative.
