PA - Military vehicle registration....

When you get antique plates, you no longer have a GVW weight classification, only the empty weight on the title.
If weighed at the scales, you could be consired overloaded based on the paperwork, not the actual capability of the vehicle.
I struggled with this issue when getting my 5 ton registered, and I specifically put in GVWR on my title. That way, if I am ever forced to go to a weigh station, I did not want to be compared to "empty" weight and wanted to be legal up to GVWR.

The flip side is that you DO need Class B (non commercial) license. Ideally, you should get an air brake endorsement, but you do not need to take a knowledge test, only the driving test. My local PENN DOT center in Bucks County had no clue (even the supervisor), but I managed to find a sympathetic ear (inspector who had son who served and drove the trucks), so he called Harrisburg and spoke to someone who gave him this advice. The guy said to me bluntly, "it all depends who pulls you over. State Police might say one thing, truck enforcement guys another, I wish you lots of luck." Out of abundance of caution, do yourself a favor, pay the $5 for Class B learners permit and then take the driving test. This is going to give you safe harbor, in case LEO claims you are UNLICENSED to drive a 36K GVWR vehicle. God knows, we would not want the truck impounded, it would cost $800 to get it out.

Hi, I am new to forum and wanted to ask if anyone know how difficult it is to get a title for an 86 HMMWV in PA? I am looking to purchase one and there is no title just a bill of sale. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
THanks
If it is from a private owner and from the sale of a limited number of marine corps HMMWV the current owner should have a title . If it is from the current GP auctions they are for OFF-ROAD USE ONLY . You best answer is to contact the department of motor vehicles in your area .

Try explaining that logic at a weigh in station with a 5 ton load of firewood. I dare you.
IMHO, weigh station only cares that you are under GVWR. I don't know if they will challenge prohibition against hauling cargo on antique plate, but keep in mind that in some cases the truck needs to be loaded as a maintenance matter (to check operation of suspension at capacity or ABS when fully loaded). If you can use that explanation with a straight face and say that the firewood is specifically there to check ABS at load, you might have just enough wiggle room. Obviously, if you are going to Home Depot every day and hauling skids of Quickrete, you might be in different situation.

I just saw a Humvee auction on ironplanet and they were issuing SF97's, so maybe the rules changed. They still say offroad use only, so presumably you cannot register the vehicle. But you might be able to get it titled. You should try to contact a good tag place. I have used Langel in Bucks County, they are very good. http://www.edwardwlangel.com/auto.htm

Will,

I live in PA and will be picking up a Halftrack from out of state with no title. Do you still have your contacts you went through with your vehicle? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,
It's unclear to me what you need or whom your are directing your question to. Are you trying to register or title or insure your HT? What do you need help with? If you are looking for insurance, I can recommend you contact the insurance broker I used, they were very good in securing a policy. If you are trying to register it, I've never registered a HT and not sure if tracks are an issue, but you should definitely look into antique tags, as the registration is a one time fee (not annual) and no inspection is needed. Welcome to the forum.

So I have been Reading all these, I just bought an M998 Humvee, my problem is that I don't have a title at all. The vehicle came with only a bill of sale from the gentleman I purchase it from. How do I obtain a title in the first place? I live in Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh.

Start by visiting a tag specialist that services used car dealers. They will know all the ins and outs. To find such a place, visit a couple car dealers and ask who they use. There is probably a way to get a title, though it may be a hassle. Calling Harrisburg may be an option, but results will depend on who you get on the line and how willing they are to help.

I stopped at the AAA today. The lady was very knowledgeable she assisted me once before to get a title for an old Cadillac I had. She told me that there is no way to get a title in PA from a bill of sale. It's looking that my only option is to hire a lawyer and go to a motions court and ask a local magistrate to issue a judgement to petition for a title. She said that even that may not work once it gets to Penndot.

I need help guys!

Look up "Vehicle Title Surety Bond In Pennsylvania". You'll find someone like this: https://www.suretybondsdirect.com/surety-bond/certificate-of-title-bond/pa

Without looking closely at PA surety laws, I don't know the specifics. But that's how you generate a title, when you own the vehicle but do not have a title.

Another option might be for you to title it in another U.S. state and then transfer it into PA.

Only advice I'd give you is to NOT do anything illegal. Too much at stake, and there's most certainly a legal way around this issue.
