Previous owner painted everything. Any thoughts on how to get paint off rubber without destroying it?

Water & steel wool or something less abrasive (steel wool comes in finer grades than SOS).

Your lucky they did not spray Bed Liner on it! Looks good for a while then turns to crap and you can never get it all off. It is the hider of many sins on a surface!

I cleaned the rubber tank strap liners -SOS pad worked well and did not appear to damage the rubber. Needs patience and elbow grease, though, which allows one to come up with plenty of words to describe the person that painted the rubber in the first place.

Hopefully the previous owner wasn't a motorpool painter or a Maaco painter. Those 2 are the very best a making paint adhere to rubber.
Just dawned on me, in the days before armorall, fire departments used brake fluid to shine up tires for parades. DOT3 is pretty fair at softening paint.
