Plywood in the M998

Does anyone have an idea what the purpose is with the plywood between the passenger seats in some of the M998s?

I may have missed it in one of the TMs and my google searches have not revealed an answer...

Just trying to learn as much about my HMMWV before I pick it up.

Don't know for sure but it provides some sound insulation, protects the paint, allows some loads to be moved more easily, and provides a level deck surface. When replacing mine I discovered that it was red wood plywood!
