Hi, Im looking at purchasing an M1008 out of the N. Phoenix area and I would like to have the owner take it to a shop to have a good look over by a qualified mechanic at my expense prior to purchase.

Is anyone on here in the Phoenix area that can recommend a shop that could scope this thing out for me?

Thanks!

Here is the deal. There are several good places to work on the 6.2 Diesel but none of them will have a clue when it comes to the Military specific stuff. They will have no clue when it comes to the alternators and charging system. Also all the places are in the east valley not north Phoenix.

Do any of you know anything about "Strictly Diesel"? They are NE of Glendale. Sorry I dont know the area that well so this may already be the area you are talking about.

I have had what seems to me to be a productive email exchange with the owner and shop foreman. They told me that they have a guy in their shop who knows all about these trucks and is a good mechanic. They offered to do the inspection including road test and written report for $100. I was very clear that if the truck is good it will be going on a transport and coming to WA so they have no future business associated with doing this inspection. I cant think of a reason why they would do this if they were just a bunch of crooks, for a hundred bucks. I could see them trying to screw me out of $500 or something but maybe Im just a fool.

The seller lives in what he called N Phoenix so Im trying to find a good place by him so he will take it there for me.

Im open to input.

Ask them if they understand the 24V charging system and will assure you it is working correctly. That it is the part of these trucks you can only get support for here on this forum. Does the 6.2 run, any body can tell you that. That's not the big issue.

Honestly have the seller send you photos and post them here. If the truck has been modified it will probably have issues if it is all original it will be easy to get working with the help of the people here. It's just that easy. I bought an M1008 on GL from Barstow, CA for $1100 in Oct 2010 and dragged it back to Phoenix, fired right up and ran great. Still runs great.

PM sent, Closer CUCV's pop up all the time. I would see if a reputable Steel Soldier could check it out over a shop, but that's just because you never know the shop might be friends with the guy or something. Best of luck,

I think that you would be pleasantly surprised at the number of guys working for the major truck sales/maintenance businesses that have one or two guys that were mechanics in the motor pool while serving in the military. Just have to ask...
