Question on Ignition start bypass to push button

Hello Everyone, the previous vehicle owner did an ignition switch bypass to a push button start. I am investigating if I need to do the Doghead relay switch over and my question is as follows:

If the push button start modification has been completed, does that take the interior starter relay out of the mix? I was going to put a volt meter on the starter relay in the dash to see if it is getting power during the start process.

I realize this is a bit of a crap shoot as maybe it can be done multiple ways, until I do some circuit tracing and testing. I searched under the forum using "Push Button Start" to find out how some people had done this to have some background in my investigation of the circuit and how it works. I did not get a straight answer but will keep digging.

So many ways to do it. Without some pictures or drawings, yes it is a crapshoot.

My questions would be, Why did he bypass it? What caused the issue?

Is the truck still 24v?

Good points Warthog,

The Municipality could not keep starters in the vehicle, they were buying 12 volt starters comes to find out versus 24 once I was digging into the problems initially. The system is still 24 volt. I will do some tracing of wiring and voltage and get some more information.

Given so many ways to do it, I guess the answer is they could have either bypassed the starter relay or it still could be in the circuit.

Time for the voltmeter.

thanks

Steve

A quick update, I had a few minutes last night and looked at the push button. It has 2 wires from the push button going through the dash, one wire goes back into the lights switch assembly, probably for power and the second connects to the big purple wire in the main harness heading back towards the passenger side of the car.

I went into Mechanical Engineering because I hated Electrical, time to learn how to read the electrical diagrams.

I would advise that you approach the diagrams as a bit of a skeptic. You don't know if any other bubba-the-electrician wiring was done in there. Most likely the diagrams match your vehicle 98% but it's that questionalble 2% that could be harboring your issue.
