Rear axle drum backing plates

I know the rears are riveted on, but is there any reason why I shouldn't drill out the rivets and replace them with grade 8 bolts/nuts? I'd like to clean them up and it would be easier off the truck.

I would just hit it with some Dawn detergent and a pressure washer.

No reason you couldn't remove them and bolt them back but that's an aweful lot of work and money on hardware just to clean. If you've got the time and money, go for it!

Good to know. Thanks. I was actually planning on stripping/painting them and testing my electrolysis tank on them.

FYI, the fronts are bolted on.
