Registering in Colorado

Curious what it takes to register an M1123 in Colorado, just bought one. I’ve heard rumors it can’t be done yet I see folks driving them with current tabs.

Spend the 150.00 and get a title from gov planet. I think it will probably make the process easier because you already have a on road title. If you didn’t get it at auction I don’t have any good advice for you. Good luck

That was my thought as well. Unfortunately the only option they offered was the SF97.

I don’t think that’s true. Call and ask. I didn’t have a title option but after a google search I called them and asked for one. Mine is on the way.
Anything sold with a clean sf97 is eligible for a on road title

Mine went through the process of a Colorado VIN. I actually paid my local seller a lot more because he went through this process. He had to make things roadworthy, which amounted to backup lights, and prove things worked, then you get the metal tag from the state police. Not saying this guarantees anything, but I am hoping this keeps me way below the radar in the future.

Agree on going the title route if you can get it.

I've been fighting this for a while now. Still waiting for my title from Gov Planet....Picked up my HMMWV 02 Sep they keep telling me my paperwork is in the next batch to send out for SF97 assignment (which has to occur before they make a title). Literally the exact same story for 6 weeks.

Anyways, I went through the process to get a CO VIN assigned and CO title based on a bill or sale, but was recently denied based on it being an ex-military vehicle. The state patrol had no problem with their inspection but the DMV freaked out when they saw it was a HMMWV. They still submitted the paperwork, but when I checked the status a month later they told me I need to go to parks and rec since it is an OHV.

At this point I'm planning to open an LLC in Montana.

The title is the way to go I believe. You have a regular out of state title and it doesn’t give them the chance to decide what title you should have as in off road vs on road. I’m waiting for mine still but when I get it I will get my vin verified and should walk out with my plates

I will try to find the paper to back this up but I am pretty sure Colorado will not allow military vehicles to be on road titled anymore. That’s how I got my black Humvee. The guy that owned it traded it to me before his title got recalled. Somewhere I still have the letter the Colorado DMV sent him. Colorado recalled all on road titles and sent out off road titles as replacements. They announced they were going to do it by sending letters to anyone with one already on road registered. LOTS of people sold their Humvees and other military stuff before their title got recalled. Not 100% sure it ended up going through but I know they did start the process of making military stuff illegal on road.

Just want to share what I have done incase it may help someone else. I live in Colorado and bought a HMMWV that was already titled out of state. I have my own business registered here. Rather than explore the hassles and the yearly gouging of registration fees, I contacted this company after being referred.

I don't recall the initial amount they charged for the first part but it was probably near $50. They helped me to register my business in Montana, it was very easy. Then sent the bill of sale form which I filled out and had notarized to sell my truck to my business. Sent this and my signed title to them. They charged a one time fee of $549 and a few weeks later I had my Montana title, permanent Montana plates, and they maintain their presence in Monatna as an agent for my company. There will never be another fee I will have to pay again. I can move anywhere in the U.S. and never be concerned again with registration. Also, if you do not have a business, it is pretty easy to request a tax ID number from the IRS with form W-9 and then register your business in any state. I know this probably is no help to the OP but I wish you the best of luck getting your title.

Wow that really sucks, sounds like some action needs to be taken, certainly there are enough MV owners in CO to garner some amount of power, they are denying you the use of your property, at about the same time the Texas legislature made it legal to title and register HMMWVs for road use. I would guess you guys wish CO was still part of Texas now!

I was told Minnesota tried to do something similar, and owners with existing titles sued the state and won. They were prevented from recinding registration, but they could prevent new registrations. (Then the law was changed to permit HMMWVs and CUCVs to be licensed.)

Note sure any owner who had a title has a big enough pocket book to try that approach or if the laws in Colorado are similar to those in Minnesota to stop the 'taking' of former registration.

My personal opinion, if the state (any state) grants a legal registration WITHOUT fraud being involved to get the title granted, then they should have no ability to rescind the registration without due compensation to the owner of the vehicle.

Sure but why? The Montana thing is easy enough. And if you wanted to spend some money and effort on this, it's much better invested in lobbying versus litigation.

Some states have a requirement that if a vehicle remains in the state more then a certain amount of time, that vehicle MUST be registered in that state. (That includes commercially owned vehicles.)

But I agree, Lobbying is the place to spend your time and money. In Minnesota they got the law changed to be (essentially) "Any former military vehicle with the same dimensions and weight as a civilian vehicle shall be licensed......" So some of the new HMMWVs might not qualify, but the older M998 does as it was the same as the 1992-1994 Hummer H1 in dimension and curb weight. Also makes it easier to license the CUCV.
