Remove spacers on m105A3 to narrow track?

Hi,

Assuming I modify the wheel wells to fit, can the 6" hub spacers on the M105A3 be simply removed, and the wheels bolted directly to the hub? I want to keep the original wheels/tires, just narrow the track.

Seems like it would work fine. I would then cut the fenders flush with the sides of the trailer and get an extra 6" clearance on each side.
