Removing the Crankshaft Pulley Nut

The oil line fitting on my timing gear cover was broken and the previous owner just jammed the oil line in and glopped on some sealant. Since I'm partial to things working like they are supposed to and not being jury-rigged, I need to replace the timing gear cover.

I know how to use a puller to remove the pulley, that seems straightforward enough.

The part I am concerned about is one step before removing the pulley - removing the pulley nut.

  1. The nut is 1 7/16" (or at least it appears to be, I can fit my boxed end wrench of the same size on it). I can't find a impact wrench socket that will fit my 1/2" impact that is bigger than 1 1/4". Even if I find this unicorn of a socket, I still have to keep the pulley immobile.
  2. The starter, etc. has been removed, so the put-the-wrench-on-the-nut-and-bump-the-starter method is out, at least for now. I'm not so certain I trust that method, anyway.
  3. The engine is still in the frame so trying to use a wood block in the engine to allow me to turn the nut is out. I'm, again, not so certain I trust that method.

What are your ideas?
