Most advise using a block heater in temperatures about 20 degrees F or lower. Cost/benefit at temps above that are usually not there.

You want a minimum of about 2 hours of run time. Most hook up a timer that will start the unit about 2 hours (or more if really cold) in advance of starting the engine.

I've been able to confirm that the crossover pipe will reach about 40 F + in zero degree F weather with a 600 watt frost plug heater.

I hope this helps ...

:ditto: A must have in the northern states. I have a 600w heater timed from 4 hrs prior to startup. If you have a long run from your truck to a power source, use a 12ga extension cord and an appliance duty timer. Way faster warmups and less wear and tear is a good thing.
