Should have no problem doing 55. Since the 400 doesn't have a lockup converter he might be able to squeeze a couple of more MPH out of it. Probably the hardest thing to get will be the flywheel. I just passed up a 2WD 465 backed up to a 6.2 in the junk yard a few months back.

i have the 465 in my pickup. its a 75 k10 with a 350. but with 32"in tires and 373 gearsits running 3000 rpm at 65 mph. but it has power to spare i have a couple of busted axles to prove it. if the m1008 has the 308 gears(i think thats what they have, not really sure) it should do considerably better

check out Car-Part.com. the closest 6.2 flywheel listed to NJ isin carlisle Pa.@ $100 most of the yards who list there will be more than happy to ship. If you strike out there I've got 1 or two that I can check for condition .

if they have 4.56 gears its going to slow down. the 4th gear ratio is only 1 to 1 on the sm465. but a 7.56 to low gear so with that much torque expect things to break

I just put an sm465 in my m1009.It all bolts up really easy.Top speed is about the same since a t400 and sm465 both have 1:1 ratios in top gear. You may gain a couple more mph since you don't have converter slippage but it isn't going to change much.I haven't really noticed any difference on the highway but I like the manual trans much better overall.I'm sure I would like an nv4500 even better,[with m1008 axles],but money prevents that at the moment.6.2 flywheels are avalible new and they aren't too expensive.

I have a 86 ex military firetruck converted to a dump with a stick and the 6.2 and 4:56s. It is great to drive around empty and will take a load (had 3 tons in it) but it is SLOW loaded down, so I wouldn't tow with it. Just my 2 cents.

yeah i could see that but its in great shape and its paid for. not towing anything big and heavy.. maybe going to 35" tires would help
