There are several alternatives that are "stock" if you're willing to pay.
There's one that is like an upside-down U that goes over the tailgate and the tire bolts on the outside.

I agree that the home-built ones generally look terrible. What I have right now is a home-built take-off from a civilian H1 that I got for $150. But I'm definitely looking for other options.
The big advantage of the Rhino carrier (IMO) is the ratcheting lift/lowering assist. With run-flats, HMMWV tires are some heavy mothers, and lifting them onto (or off of) a spare carrier is really a chore. I was working alone when I was mounting my spare on the carrier I have and it was extremely difficult to muscle that thing on there, get the pin through it, and put the lug nut on.
