Hello There,

I want to say up front I have read a lot of starter problem post's but none really answered my problems question so here it goes.

I have a 6.2 that runs like a champ, it was removed from the M1008 and put into my crew cab, I had to remove the starter for clearance and not breaking stuff issues. Upon reinstaling the starter I hooked it back up the way it came off and used the back starter bracket as well. I tried cranking it up and it sounded like the bendix was grinding teh teeth off the Flex plate ?? It also ran away on me even with the key off, so I jumped out and unhooked the batteries and it still managed to break the nose cone off the starter ! This is the same starter that has been on this engine for a long time. I know it must be install error but they are not tricky to put on so not sure where I could have went wrong. I installed another starter and the same thing happened, but I managed to get it disconnected before this one broke. The batteries are full charge and have started the other 6.2 I have also ?? Any thoughts ? It's a 12 volt system. Thank You for your help and service to this country !! [thumbzup]

Welcome to the Forum!

Before you do anything complete the Doghead Mod.

I would suggest new starter bolts, torque, then re torque a few times, then once every few months. Ensure correct allignment/clearance to the flex plate. These can be found in the TMs in my signature.

TM 9-2320-289-20
4-5. STARTER AND STARTER RELAY REPLACEMENT (Con’t).
NOTE
Starter pinion tooth-to-flywheel clearance may be measured using a wire
gage.
4. Remove 6 bolts (25) and access
cover (27) from transmission housing
(26) . Measure clearance between
starter pinion (24) tooth and flywheel
(23). Clearance should be 0.02 in. to
0.06 in. (0.50 mm to 1.50 mm). Add
shims (10) as required. Install access
cover (27) with 6 bolts.

OK, Will do. Now is that applicable on 12 volt systems ? It's a regular production truck that I put the 6.2 into ? If so I have already printed it out and will pick it up tonight ! Thank you for help me out !!

He doesn't have a CUCV, just the engine. It is a 1988 crewcab pickup.

When you removed the starter, where there any shims installed? You have have to try adding some to keep the bendix from sticking.

I have no idea why the starter would stick on as your truck shouldn't have the starter relay issue.

Was the truck a gasser or a diesel?

It was a 454. I do know that I seen something similar to what's being replacing with the Doghead Mod under the dash of my truck. I'll look to make 100% sure. Also what's wierd is this starter had no shims and has started this motor for years ?? Have no clue why this happened.

So you took the 6.2 with the original 24v starter out a m1008 and put it in your civy crew cab and reinstalled it. Your crew cab is 12v as you stated. But your starter is still the same 24v that came from the CUCV. Am I missing something?

As said here your 24 volt starter will not work on a 12 volt system.

I am wondering if it's the starter bolts ?? The bracket is installed as well

First you need a 12v starter if you are not running dual alternators and the CUCV 24v system under the hood, second you need new bolts (a must avail at any GM dealer), third you need shims (even the original starter sometimes requires them for a reinstall), and last you need to make sure the starter relay does not need the doghead mod. If you are having clearance issues you may need to go with the newer high torque starter which is smaller in diameter and the new style bracket. What did you do about about the glow plug system and the stuff that goes along with it in the dash (wait light, module, etc)?

I used a manual switch, and give a 10 one thousand count. I have a 12 v starter on it now, I'll try the starter bolts and see if the Doghead mod is needed as well. Thank You

Hey Thomas
Is this the motor you got from me (red dually) ?
If so that is a civy j code motor, not a cucv motor.

Hey Buddy !!

No This came from Buster, 67_SS396's Blazer. I have your motor in my rock crawler !! I figured out why they stopped driving the red dually though ! The drvers side head was cracked !! I have the starter off the civy motor on the cucv, I just can't get any luck on these motors ! It broke the nose cone smooth off the cucv starter !
