Funny! I was recently driving a 1981 VW beetle in Brazil last week and it was a hoot. Highway speeds were hard to come by going up hill. It was a wee bit of an engine. I was able to get it over 105kph down hill standing on the throttle. The owner added electric windows and an alarm system that had it's own ideas. Clearly the car had multiple personalities. The wife felt it was a death trap! But it was amazing how many of these were on the road after all these years...

For a 1302 or 1303 Beetle an automatic transmission is factory stuff and original. Those had a marking on the back , f.e.1302 automatic. However, most of the beetles were manual.
