Surge brakes assembly M101A2

after some intense reading of the tech manual I set out to fix my surge brake ..in particular the shock needs to be replaced.

Does the adjustable jack and safety chains need to be removed to get to the shock????

The manual seems to take apart everything on the tongue

It almost seems as if I can just take off the actuator and the MS

Is that just hopeful thinking or do i have to tear down the whole shabang esp that huge locking nut that holds the safety chains?

That looks like a real PITA!!!!!!!!

There are 4 bolts that hold the assembly to the trailer. 2 are visible from above and the other two are bolted in from underneath, inside the little recess.

I've swapped out the units before, but never tore them down further. I need to though as I have one defective unit to repair.

You do not need to pull the entire assembly off to change the shock, nor do you need to remove the jack or safety chains. You only need to pull 6 nuts and 2 bolts, 4 for the lunette to hitch and 2 for the shock to the assembly, 1 of which is inside. Fairly easy to do. Good luck.

EDIT - I just did a full rebuild about a month or two ago and I took it off. While if doing a full rebuild, this is easier; it isn't necessary. You will remove the lunette assembly from the bottom of the hitch by removing the side plates (chase the threads with a 1/2x20 die while the nuts are off and get new locking nuts). With this removed, you will be pulling the master cylinder actuator out and may tear the cover (replacements are fairly easy to get). With this assembly out, change all the interior bolts; best now to do while it is apart.

It is easier to align the shock with the master removed, but it can be done in place; just takes a couple tries. Again, good luck on the rebuild.

Here are the photos of the trailer and assembly after removal. I put the bolts back in the holes as seen in the first and second photo. The front two bolts, nearest to lunette, are accessed from inside the recess under the mounting plate. I used a wrench to remove them. Smaller hands are required to reinstall, so my son started them for me and then a wrench was used to tighten back up. A ratchet does not work well in the small space given.

On the shock replacement u can pm me and i will stop by and show you how to do
It It is pretty straight forward I think it's only 4 bolts then the Lunette comes of and then you can take the shock out. Any luck on the jack handle?
