I drove about 90 miles for a car show that the organizers failed to update the info for, so Jak and I were heading home and I took a random road that I knew goes through a national forest.

The day wasn't *completely* wasted. We found a great spring fed swimming hole!

And swung by an old Air Force base to visit the Flying Tigers memorial.

.
Well, I hate that the sponsor of the car show failed miserably...
The Air Force base though - was a hit for sure!

That F-105 in Wild Weasel colors just makes me stop what I am doing and sit in awe for a few minutes of what those guys did.

There is a 2 seat F-105 at the cavenaugh airplane museum in Addison. They had it sitting out on the ramp over by a fence looking all neglected and forgotten. I walked over to it and when I ducked my head into the front wheel well there was a “Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association “ sticker. WOW! I may be wrong, but I can only think of 1 reason a 2 seat F-105 would have one of those stickers on it.

Reads like you had a great day.

To me, the best takeaway from this is that you had your youngling with you. There is no better thing for you or the kid than spending quality time together.

The F-105 is an F-105G Wild Weasel, their job was to tease the SAM sites (surface to air missiles) into revealing themselves, then dodging the missiles while attempting to destroy the site. It was a very dangerous game, losses were high.

Cheers

@kendelrio if you're going to mention that name again I only have one answer for you;
moooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
(haha?)

@M813rc well I can see why they did it, coping to a known hit then afterward try take that hit directly down versus losing a normal sortie to unknown hit from unknown location .. but still hmm
