Depends on what you call 'worth the effort'. A well outfitted shop with hoist is the safest place to tackle a job like this as the bed has to come off, complete rear suspension assy. has to come out and new spring perches have to be installed to accept a set of front springs, bed gets shortened and put back together taking care to retain bed mounting points on it and the frame, the frame will get bobbed too if you don't want it to look like a wheelbarrow when you're done. It's definately not a week-end job 'with only simple hand tools'.
There seems to be a bunch of them out there. If you're starting out with a deuce that isn't a rose-- or rare, and you do it right; you'll end up with a rig that's more managable in tight places, will still carry a lot more than a 1 ton pick-up though you'll have to lift stuff higher to load and unload, and having lost an axle going from 6X6 to 4X4 will keep you from worrying about needing a CDL to operate it.
