Transfer case end play

Getting ready to put the output shaft bearing back in my transfer case and I'm trying to find out how much end play (in and out) the output shaft should have.

How much end play? Nada, zero! And no preload either.

Correct me if I'm wrong but to eliminate end play of and that what the shims are for the are behind the bearing cover correct?
