Turn Signal Question

Being that this is my first deuce and TM 10 does not answer this question directly, here goes.

My light and turn signals work fine but I have two questions.....

First, do you have to turn on the light switch for the turn signals to work?

Second, do you have to manually return the turn signal lever to the off position or is my turn signal assembly defective?

Thanks,

I always turn my light switch on right after I start the truck. Otherwise its too easy to drive off after letting the truck warm up and not have any brakelights.
