turn signals dont always work

I hope i understand the system correctly. I have to have my headlights in the on position in order for the turn signals to work. They do not always work, but if they start working they work fine, till I shut down and begin again, and we start all over with intermittent operation. Where do I begin checking this system? Or is this a normal thing?

I think head lights on is normal but the intermitant operation doesn't sound right i would check all the grounds on the head light system

it could be a falty flasher/relay as well, my gess is a ground

I was figuring the flasher, but where is it, and is it something you can get locally or a special gizmo?

should be on the fuse pannel have no idea where it is as i don't yet have a truck but should be at napa or local parts store

I was wrong its at eastern surplus new for 65$
propably on the fire wall some were

The flasher is on the driver side inner fender.
