Not to mention the elevation sucks a fair amount of power away from an engine that already isn't known for being a powerhouse. Might be pretty limited on towing capacity because of that.

On the plus side, looks like you already have a proper hitch. I wouldn't trust a stock pintle much over 1,000 lbs.
We live about 500 feet above sea level, this was a camping trip in the mountains. If we had to tow anything more than about 100 miles I'd most likely use the Cummins powered RAM.

Because my truck doesn't have its factory bumpers I don't have the pintle hitch. We just put that hitch on last week, its a Curt brand, rated for 10,000lbs. Got it for only $120 on Amazon too.

Payed closer attention today now that I'm back home. Not seeing any smoke back at sea level.

Just a result of altitude. =]
That plus the fact that you got on it and blew out soot that's been collecting in the muffler since the last time you stepped on it. I wouldn't worry about that at all, I've got one that when I step on it (load or not) whoevers behind me disappears!
