Voltmeter Trouble

I need a little troubleshooting advice...

My Voltmeter died today. I drove about 5 miles and everything was totally in the green. Went inside the store for a few minutes and when I got back in to head home the gauge was totally off / dead.

Per the -20 TM, the VM relay should have a White wire....needless to say, mine does not have a white wire. According to the troubleshooting, if you pull out the relay and jumper the White to Black, the gauge should go into the green.

I have:

1. Pink / Black Stripe
2. Black / White Stripe
3. Single Black Wire
4. "Double" Black wire

Should I assume that the Black w/ White Stripe is the same as the White wire in the wiring diagram?

I measured voltage at that wire and found ~25V, and ~12.5 on the Pink w/ Black Stripe

Are you sure you have the correct relay?
I am looking for the relay bolted to the metal plate with the starter relay, correct? There are 2 relays (besides the starter one) on that plate. Neither of them has a white wire going to it.

I've looked at both of those sockets earlier today. I can't really tell easily which is which (since the wires don't match whats on the diagram). When I got the truck the relays were all hanging loose under the dash (not attached to the plate) so I'm not 100% they are in the correct position on the mount. ME --> :???:

Check the fifth link in my signature. Also to quickly do some isolation, swap the two relays. See if the problem moves.
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the problem stayed put.....looks like the relay isn't the issue. Unfortunately I think the gauge may be kaput!

When I have time I'll just pull the harness of the gauge itself and check for voltage. If I get ~24V across the gauge harness then the wiring is good...

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Looking at the wiring diagram E-4 from the TM 9-2320-289-34 Appendix E, you are looking at the correct relay. The diagram does show a white wire but yours happens to be black w/white strip.

That wire is coming from the voltmeter and should have the 24v. The pink/black wire is from circuit #139 and is 12v from the IGNITION fuse.

If the voltage is there, then it does sound like a bad meter. You might take it apart and clean the connectors.

Simply looking at the -34P TM, I found the relay part number(12033862).

Then a google search will find it and several other compatible replacement relays.
