What brand of Oil?

TM9

New member
Okay I am new to the M Series collecting world. I have a 1967 M109A3 shop van body deuce. I checked the oil and it is black and so thick it almost looks like tar. I have read that it takes up to 20 quarts without changing the oil filter and 22 with the filter change. Is this correct? Also what brand and types of oil do you guys prefer? I have an LDT 465 D1 engine. Also what TM number is best for the engine and the brake system?

Thanks in advance! Paul

Here is a complete list of the TM's, with a short description of what each covers. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with all of them. After years of being in the civilian car hobby I am still learning to navigate the military manuals and the way they break up data.

Any oil you put in a Diesel will trun black fast no matter what eng it is. It's a Diesel thing. With that being said just becasue its black does not mean it need changed, yours may. Use a oil thats for Diesel engs thats the inport thing. You can also send a sample of your oil to a lab and they will tell you if it needs changed or not.

Most people seem to be using the Rotella or the Mobil oil. It will turn black fast but thats okay. Look at some of the info that Clinto suggested.
