What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Brake job on the back drums, new front passenger side wheel bearing and new shocks.

Next up: new exhaust (have the parts, just need to put it in), front passenger ball joints and glow plug resistor bypass w/new glow plugs.

Already done (in approximate reverse order) since i bought it:

-replaced windshield wiper motor and put electrical pump in for fluid
-new belts
-doghead starter relay conversion
-replaced leaking mechanical fuel pump
-new batteries
-new signal, marker and tail light lenses all around
-sandblasted and painted rims; installed 33" BFG Mud Terrains
-replaced broken rear window and window crank mechanicals
-new fuel filter and oil change
-new seat belts
-DIY bed liner on interior
-welded in new driver side front floor pan and driver side rocker
-new ignition key cylinder

I fixed the vibration I had between 40 and 45 mph. I took the rear drive shaft out and the rear u joint fell apart and was very bad. The tube had some dents in it from Gov-lick fork lift operators. The drive shaft shop re-tubed it, replaced both u-joints and balanced it for $200.00 She rides smoooooth now. Today I balanced the tires. That made even more improvement. Next step is shocks and steering damper.

What I've done to my CUCV is

-Oil change/AC delco oil filter
-New air filter
-doghead relay conversion
-rebuilt my 24v starter and installed it
-repaired my passenger headlamp (when i pulled it out, the wiring all fell apart) used weatherproof butt connectors and attached them
-got stuck in mud left a huge crater too dark to take a pic but it was fun
Everything above I have done within the last two weeks

-just YESTERDAY my tailgate lock and clutch assembly broke so I will be needing to fix that my window is stuck down at the moment (suppost to Rain today aua)

Built a holder for the spare tire on the m1028 using an extra troop seat leg and a homemade spinner setup from an m37 that came with a lot of CUCV parts I bought at a show. I cut the troop seat leg down and welded a right hand m37/m series lug nut to it.

Cleaned up the 1031 after back to back MVPA events. Think all the water bottles and the like were found..both events were 2 day camping trips and both were hot.
Still having a tiny seep out of the oil cooler line o-ring connection right before sampling valve. The part number from the TM cross-references to a standard #8 refrigeration o-ring which being Viton should be just fine, those I have plenty of. So in desperation, I put TWO in there, looks like a bit of a sloppy fit is the culprit on this tube fitting (swaged male tube fitting).

Changed out leaky heater hoses,while antifreeze drained thought I would put in a new 195 thermostat warms up much faster,I suspect my old one has been stuck open for some time as I would get 15mpg in winter and 20mpg in summer.Also added fuel press. gauges,one into filter,one out of filter.1009 running fantastic,but still idles rough.IP rebuild is next.

-new fuel filter
-new air cleaner

changed charge system back to 24 volt hooked up both alts
new belts P/s pump ,alt D ,alt P
changed wiring back to 24 volt (not all of it......blew the amp for the radio it was hooked to 24 volts :shock: aua)
replace 12v starter broken starter with 24v working one
cleaned and inspected
changed front and rear diff fluids
changed oil and filter
cleaned out mice nest...(sitting all winter stupid me didn't think of mice moth balls next time )

next fix driver side rust replace repair

oil change with filter
changed both front and rear diff fluids
put troops seats back into truck
install 12v charging port

next is new tires for m1008


one more thing both trucks now have 1 alt and all 3 brand new belts with tools to replace it learned the hard way now i'm prepared haha

Over the past 2 days I:

-Sanded and painted my chrome tailgate mech with Plasti-Dip. I'll see how it holds up.
-Painted my Specter Jerry can OD. Can't find my yellow spray paint so I might just leave the top as is.
-Opened up my APC dome light to clean it up and refurbish it. Broke the aluminum flange that screws into the side and holds the female rubber boot and contact. If anyone has one to sell send me a PM...
-Used K9Vic's t-nut antenna mount method to mount my APC Dome light. I'm gonna cut some rubber hose to act as sleeves/washers for the button head bolts... I had to shave the front 2 t-nuts because the slope of the roofline. Space is smaller toward the front than the rear...

I'll probably use the same method to mount my interior cooling fan as well. Great idea man!

ETA: Plasti-Dip already peeled off when I cranked my back window up. Guess I should have rolled it up so I could let the paint dry overnight. Peeled off pretty easy. Maybe I'll try undercoating tomorrow...

Got all my parts for spin on fuel filter (see Here)

Couple days ago I soaked my pistons in MMO/ATF, to see if it could free a possible stuck piston ring (M1010 had been sitting for 6+ years, new batteries, and still really slow cranking)... Cranked it, let it sit some more... seemed to be cranking over a lot faster, but not sure if it's because of no compression (no glow plugs installed), or if it's because it's broke loose.... been soaking for about a week now... Will clear it again and put new GPs in tomorrow.

I installed an electronic fuel pump, but need to put it on a relay.. Need to change starter relay tomorrow as well....

So much to do...

I just got done putting 1 ton axles front and back, a 4inch ORD leaf spring lift in rear, new shocks, new mounts, new drive line (1 ton with double CV), new brakes all the way around, new (to me) 37 inch HUMVEE Tires and rims, new brake lines front and back, and new shocks up front, with new 6 inch leaf springs up front, and new stearing arm. I also went thru both axles and regeared to 4.10 matching and changed all the guts to make sure they are reliable ... Been a very long 6 weeks ... BUT SHE DRIVES GREAT !!!

I saw the picture before I read your comments and said to myself, wonder if he got that idea from may antenna mounting idea. I see you did and thanks for the tag, it has held up well. Taken my Suburban through many tree branches and held up well.

The M1009 is looking good, saw your post with the new tires. That rear crank was not there when I bought it and replaced it with the chrome one, the black are hard to find. Never saw one on eBay until after I bought the chrome one, just my luck.

Haha, yeah I hear ya on the luck. Happens with all my 'spensive hobbies.

The Plasti-dip peeled off pretty easily, but I'm gonna try undercoating when it isn't so windy. The only mechanical issues I've had are the leaky OEM fuel filter assembly which I swapped out for the FM100 unit from Gimpy and a late shift in very cold temps. It's fine after it warms up and in weather like this, so I'll get to it eventually.

This truck has been a solid DD!

Got a few bucks coming in so I'm hoping to put some fun stuff on it after I add an SYE, refresh the steering linkage, rebuild the front d-shaft and some other stuff. Keep an eye out!

ETA: I just finished reading your 'Burban thread the other day. I remember drooling over that thing when I picked up the M1009. I got some pointers and inspiration from the build!

Pulled my wiper linkage. Gonna scrub it down, repaint and grease everything up so they run faster/smoother. Looks like one arm of the linkage is bent, which seems to be a possible cause of slow/jerky operation. I also cleaned all electrical contacts in the wiper system. I'd rather not bypass the resistors as I hope to one day run some commo gear...

Didn't think the process would be as in depth as it was, so I didn't get any disassembly pics, but I will post some tomorrow since I'm off work. Gotta grab some white lithium spray and more beer!

Replaced the GPs, crimped on new connectors, put in my spin on fuel filter assembly, bypassed the GP resistor, ran 4GA directly to the GP solenoid, then a 8ga jumper from the solenoid to the 12V feed, wired a relay to the electronic fuel pump I installed (relay switched by fuel shutoff solenoid wire).

I spent the last two months busting knuckles on the green machine 1009 out in my garage swapping motors, all by myself. Somehow its hard to find friends during times like these. Doghead mod and GP bypass done, and am tracing back all the wiring mess to the appropriate places. I've tightened and retightened everything I can think of, and need to check and fill all the fluids, coolant, etc. I siphoned all the old fuel out and put in fresh along with some additives. Sort of my own little cocktail. Diesel Kleen, ATF, etc. Charged the batteries, just waiting for the right day to turn the key.

I must say, whether you all know it or not, the posts and stickys on this site have helped greatly. Thanks, and I will let you know how it goes. Cheers!
